Love the range

This is a very good range with many features that were a pleasant surprise. The wide viewing angle of the front glass is very nice and my wife is ready to use the convection oven. It also comes with an assortment of racks and water tray accessory. We followed the instructions on the vent piping and the fan suction is excellent. It is very strong on high speed, low speed is adequate for most cooking. Like others, we had little choice on the replacement of our downdraft JennAir.The install can be challenging, dependent on what you are replacing I suppose. It is about what I was expecting though due to the type of range and the feature of the downdraft so I was not surprised. If I was replacing a KitchenAid, it may have been easier. The downdraft piping can be installed low on the rear wall or in the floor near the back wall. You'll need about 4.5" from either side of a 30"w opening for sliding the new range in over the blower and the pipe whether in the floor or wall. My old range blower and pipe were to the right side but further towards the front and so we had to move the hole and pipe to the rear. I researched for details before purchase but was unable to find anything. Attached is a photo of the floor template. Notice the specifics on blower mounting and downdraft hole location. If done per this template, the new range will just slide right in at the end. You'll also need to make note of your electrical plug location. I had to relocate ours. Initially, the range stuck out about 4.5 inches. This was mostly the control panel but my wife wanted it further in so I cut 2" from the granite countertop. There was enough overhang in the rear (about 3") that I did not need to modify the inside of cabinet. Note that the trim kit does not exend befond the front control panel. This is something we elected to live with and is acceptable if you have a good cut in your countertop. We built a framework from PVC and covered in 2 mil plastic to keep the dust down. Also had a shopvac (with dustbag) running while cutting to suck up the dust. We covered the inside cabinets with plastic as well and put plenty of towels on the floor to absorb water. Used a spray bottle to keep water in the path while cutting. Before cutting, I turned off the breaker and verified power was off. It was a lengthy project but worth it. Take your time, measure twice and you should be ok if you are handy. I would not trust this install with just anyone though. We did notice a few stains (from cooked on food/grease) in the glass top the first week of cooking and we could not get them out. We were disappointed but ordered the cleaning kit specified in the owners manual. The stains came out no problem so we are very pleased. There was a strong smell from the oven the first few times we used it. It faded and then went away after about 1.5 weeks.

Love the unit, which replaced a 30 year old downdraft. The slide out rack is a very nice feature and the digital controls are easy. You can lock the digital controls, which is great because of having kids. However, within a month or so of installation the unit gave an error code about something electrical. We followed the directions online (reset breaker) and it happened again. The unit still works fine but the error code returned about a half dozen times over about 6 months. I finally called to have a tech come out. He said the code is common because the part related to the code goes bad. He tried to replace it but has to reorder because the appliance store he works at ordered the wrong one.

Exterior too hot!

I bought two of these ranges. One is just fine. The second one, when heated to just 350 degrees, gets dangerously hot on the exterior. The cabinetry knobs adjacent to the oven are untouchable when the oven is operating. The KitchenAid hierarchy issued some babble about the temperature level that is allowed on the exterior of ovens and offered no explanation why the one oven operates correctly and the other does not. I intend to contact the Consumer Safety Organization regarding this problem as a small child or an older person’s skin could definitely be burned by brushing against this appliance. The technican could offer no explanation why one oven overheated and the other did not.

Dangerous appliance. Do not buy!

The knobs on this appliance turns easily and have about a 1” play before the starter kicks in. I have found them inadvertently turned on with gas filling the house several times. KitchenAid is aware and says it is due to care and use and recommends i get knob covers. It is a flawed design. Also the cat walks on the panel and turns things on and off. Downdrafts doesn’t work well either. I have had several KitchenAid appliances over the years and am disappointed they will not help me.
